INNOVATION RESILIENCY 2020

Were you looking forward to a conference, but then it got cancelled?

What about that innovation event, class, or training where you couldn’t wait to learn something new but now you can’t be there in person? And how about other meetups or opportunities to connect & learn that got cancelled?

You are not alone. Several of ours got cancelled too!

In the spirit of being action-oriented, adventurous and experimental innovators working to solve problems in the public interest, a small, informal team from MITRE is initiating a quick-turn experiment to see how resilient our community truly is. We’re aiming to help close some of the gaps caused by travel restrictions (medical, budgetary or otherwise).
Specifically, we’re creating a lightly curated online Innovation Resiliency Event  on 19 March 2020. YOU are invited to virtually speak, participate, and gather in (online) community. GET THE WHOLE SCHEDULE HERE!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

WHAT IS THIS EVENT CALLED?
The working title isInnovation Resiliency 2020. It’s an experiment to explore ways to help the innovation community quickly recover and adjust in the face of short-notice cancellations. We hope someone comes up with a catchy nickname for it.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
With the cancellation of so many large conferences, we’d like to help people still get exposed to new ideas and people without exposing them to new pathogens.  It’s a quick-turn experiment in agility, resiliency, and collaboration, trying to create something new and helpful during a time of much disruption.

WHO’S IN CHARGE HERE?
Nobody – and everybody. A small, informal team from MITRE is stepping into the instigator role, sort of serving as the central hub for planning and organizing. But it’s a very loose collective, and we’re 100% crowd-sourcing the content and organizing. Decisions are being made by whoever wants to make decisions. We like to think of it as decentralized rather than disorganized. So far, it’s working just fine.

HOW CAN I HELP?
Spread the word, invite someone to participate, give a one hour talk, organize a panel, schedule an AMA on the social media site of your choice, or even just register to attend one of the events.

HOW DO I GET SELECTED TO SPEAK?
You pick yourself! MITRE isn’t looking to own or control this event. We are here simply to instigate and enable the the community. We’d like to create a positive space where good things can happen. It’s an open invitation – you don’t need our permission to participate, but if you want it, you’ve got it. Everyone is welcome!

WHAT STREAMING PLATFORM SHOULD I USE?
Whatever works for you! Facebook Live is pretty popular, and there’s also Zoom, Hopin, Google Hangouts (Chrome), Hangouts (Google Play),… you get the picture. Sort of like when a conference has events at multiple venues across the city, including unofficial venues. We recommend doing a dry-run or two beforehand, so you know how to use whatever streaming platform you select.

WHAT TOPICS SHOULD THIS EVENT INCLUDE?
In general, we think people are looking for “the sort of things we would have found at SXSW”-ish stuff. Whatever interesting, professional, creative, curious, thought-provoking, mind-expanding stuff you might like to share with the world to stimulate intellectual debate and interaction. Please use sound judgment and only propose topics that are safe & appropriate for work.

WHAT SORT OF EVENTS CAN GO ON THE LIST?
We’d love for this to be a collection of LIVE events – talks, panels, discussions, virtual tours, etc. Do it for 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes… or whatever duration makes sense to you. Want to record it and save it for later? Go for it! And it does not have to be all video. You could schedule an Ask Me Anything on Twitter, responding to people’s questions in real-time as a virtual interaction event.

ARE YOU JUST TRYING TO RECREATE SXSW / HIMSS20 / ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPO / ETC?
Nope! This won’t take the place of the full conference experience by a long shot. It’s just a modest attempt to make some connections and create something good and useful.

WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT TIMEZONES?
Please take that into account as you schedule your stuff! If you want to reach participants in California or Hawaii, don’t start at 8:00 am East Coast time. And vice-versa, of course. We’re hoping to fill the whole day with events, so that no matter where you live, there will be something interesting happening

WHAT IF I HAVE A QUESTION?
Drop a note through Linkedin, leave a comment on a post, drop us an email (ITK – at – mitre.org), or even better, propose an answer. We may not have an answer to your question either, but we’ll try to figure it out together.

WHAT IF I HAVE A BETTER IDEA?
Congratulations, and yes please! There’s a zero percent chance we’re doing this 100% correctly, so if you’ve got better ideas about any aspect of this, please speak up and better yet, step up!!! Got a cool scheduling tool, an integrated streaming platform, or just a better way to describe all of this? Jump right in and make it so. Nobody’s going to stop you. We only ask that you do this collaboratively, inclusively, and constructively, respecting the opinions of the rest of the group.

HOW CAN I SIGN UP?
Go to eventbrite and search for events on 19 March, or check our Master Schedule Page (which we’ll do our best to keep up to date)
